【原文】仁从中出，义从外作。仁故不以天下为利，义故不以天下为名。仁故不代王，义故七十而致政。是故圣人上德而下功，尊道而贱物。道德当身故不以物惑。《戒》

【汉解】仁是从心里发出的，义是在外面实行的。仁，所以不利用天下谋私利；义，所以不利用天下猎私名。仁，所以不肯取代他人而自立为王；义，所以年到七十而交出政务。因此，圣人总是以德为上而功业在下，重视道而贱视物利。道德在身，所以不被物利所诱惑。

【英译】Benevolence comes from within. Righteousness is expressed without. He is benevolent and therefore does not use the realm for his own profit. He is righteous and therefore does not use the realm to gain fame. He is benevolent and therefore does not attempt to replace the king. He is righteous and therefore turns over the government at age seventy. For this reason, the sage esteems the Power and plays down achievement, honors the Way and distains the material word.  Since the Way and the Power occupy his person, he is not misled by the material word.
